Balinese Gamelan
The sound of gamelan is the sound of Bali. It drifts from temples at dusk, accompanies Kecak performances under the stars, and marks every ceremony from birth to cremation. The instruments — bronze keys, gongs, and drums arranged in an interlocking ensemble — produce a layered, hypnotic music unlike anything in the Western tradition.
At Pondok Pekak, your gamelan lesson gives you direct access to a full set of instruments and a teacher who has played since boyhood. The class begins by helping you understand how gamelan music works: its cyclical structure, the interlocking patterns between instruments, and the role each instrument plays in the ensemble. Then you sit down and play.
Gamelan is, in one sense, easier to get started with than most Western instruments — the bronze keys are tuned and ready, and within an hour most guests can play a complete repeating cycle of a traditional piece. It is an incredibly satisfying experience: you arrive knowing nothing, and you leave having played music that has accompanied Balinese ceremonies for over a thousand years.
