Balinese Painting
Traditional Balinese painting has its own distinct visual language — bold black outlines, flat planes of rich colour, and densely packed scenes drawn from the Ramayana, the Mahabharata, and the rhythms of village life. It is an art form developed over centuries in the royal courts of Ubud, and at Pondok Pekak you can learn it from a painter who grew up within that tradition.
Your class begins with a brief introduction to the history and conventions of Balinese painting: how scenes are composed, what the symbolic colours mean, and how the characteristic fine linework is achieved. Then you pick up your brush and begin. Your teacher will guide you from the initial pencil sketch through the ink outlines to the final colouring — step by step, at a pace that suits you.
By the end of your session — up to three hours — you will have a finished painting on quality canvas or paper, signed by you, ready to frame and hang at home. It is one of the most satisfying creative experiences available in Ubud.
