Fruit Carving
Fruit carving is one of those Balinese arts that looks impossible until you try it. Walk past any ceremony, hotel buffet, or Balinese market and you will see watermelons transformed into lotus flowers, papayas turned into baskets, and pineapples carved with geometric patterns so intricate they seem machine-made. In Bali, this skill is passed down through families and used in religious offerings and celebrations.
At Pondok Pekak, your fruit carving class is taught by someone who has been doing this since childhood, and their patience with beginners is remarkable. You will start with the knife techniques — how to hold it, how to control depth, how to make clean curves in fruit flesh — and build up to increasingly intricate designs. Working with tropical fruits that are fresh, firm, and fragrant makes the whole experience a pleasure for the senses.
It is a fun, accessible class suitable for all ages and skill levels. At the end of two hours you will have two or three carved pieces to photograph, share, and eat — and a new appreciation for this overlooked corner of Balinese artistic life.
