Wood Carving
Wood carving is woven into the fabric of Balinese life — from the intricate panels of temple gates to the decorative pieces sold in every art market in Ubud. At Pondok Pekak, you learn from a craftsman who has been carving since childhood, working in the traditional Balinese style that distinguishes this island's artistry from anywhere else in the world.
Your class begins with selecting your wood and your motif. Balinese carving draws heavily from Hindu mythology, nature, and geometric patterns — your teacher will help you choose something achievable and meaningful. You'll learn how to hold and move the chisels safely, how to read the grain of the wood, and how to build up a design from rough outline to fine detail.
With up to three hours to work, you'll be surprised how much you can accomplish. Most guests finish a complete piece — a relief panel, a decorative mask, or a smaller ornamental figure — ready to take home as a genuine handmade souvenir of Bali.
